The wife and I have upgraded our garage-with-attached-living-quarters and I am begrudgingly having to get Crime Warner internet to get the speed I want.
I already have my own modem, the Motorola SB6141, but CWC needs my MAC address to activate my internet connection. Is this normal? We have ATT U-Verse at our old place and they gave us our equipment.
How hard is it to install a VPN to the modem? Will I need a pc with an Ethernet connection to get that set up? I had planned on using OpenDNS since it’s free, but I am willing to consider other options.
I really only want a VPN so CWC can’t fuck with my packets.
We’re not getting cable TV so I’m going to PIRATE ALL THE THINGS
I don’t really pirate all that much, it’s more a principal issue than anything else.

VPN will only encrypt traffic to the endpoint. If you want to use p2p software, get a VPN service, and use it for that. Otherwise any 443 traffic is already encrypted. Opendns is okay. I have a feeling they get paid not to block tracking sites. Google is decent too as far as dns goes.
